UPI International: Accept Payments from NRIs & Foreign Tourists (2026 Guide)
How Indian merchants, hotels, and retail stores accept UPI payments from international tourists and NRIs. Explore NRE/NRO accounts, foreign SIMs, and gateway setup.
With over 32 million Non-Resident Indians (NRIs) and millions of foreign tourists visiting India annually for leisure, medical tourism, and heritage travel, international visitor spending represents a multi-billion dollar market.
Historically, inbound tourists and NRIs visiting India were forced to rely on international Visa/Mastercard plastic, paying 3.5% to 5.0% foreign exchange markups, while Indian merchants paid 3% to 3.5% international payment gateway fees. Worse, many local boutique shops, auto-rickshaws, and craft markets only accepted UPI, leaving tourists stranded without cash.
Through NPCI International Payments Limited (NIPL), international travelers and diaspora communities can now make seamless UPI payments at Indian merchant counters and websites.
Here is the complete merchant guide to UPI International.
The Global Expansion of UPI (NIPL)
NPCI has expanded UPI into a global payment corridor through two distinct mechanisms:
The Inbound International UPI Corridors:
┌─────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────┐
│ 1. Non-Resident Indians (NRIs): │
│ • Operates on international SIM cards (+1, +44, +971). │
│ • Linked to Indian NRE / NRO bank accounts. │
│ • Supported in 12+ major diaspora nations. │
│ │
│ 2. Foreign Tourists & Inbound Travelers (UPI One World): │
│ • Prepaid digital wallet issued upon airport arrival. │
│ • Loaded via international credit card or foreign forex. │
│ • Works across all standard Indian merchant UPI QRs. │

Understanding NRI Accounts vs. Foreign Tourists (UPI One World)
1. Non-Resident Indians (NRE / NRO Integration)
In earlier years, registering on PhonePe or Google Pay required an Indian (+91) mobile number. Under updated RBI guidelines, Indian banks (ICICI, HDFC, SBI, Axis, Kotak) allow NRIs to link their international mobile numbers directly to their Non-Resident External (NRE) or Non-Resident Ordinary (NRO) accounts.
- Payee Experience: Identical to domestic UPI. An NRI from California or Dubai scans your QR code and enters their UPI PIN.
- Merchant Impact: The payment credits your domestic current account in Indian Rupees (INR) with standard 0% debit MDR.
2. Foreign Tourists (“UPI One World”)
For travelers without an Indian bank account, authorized PPI issuers (like Transcorp and Thomas Cook) operate airport kiosks where travelers:
- Present their foreign passport and visa.
- Load Indian Rupees using their international credit card or foreign currency cash.
- Receive a dedicated UPI One World app that allows them to scan every merchant QR stand across India.
How to Enable UPI International on Your Merchant QR
Because UPI International operates on standardized NPCI clearing protocols, any standard merchant QR code generated by VyaparGateway is already globally interoperable:
[Foreign Tourist / NRI scans VyaparGateway Dynamic QR]
│
▼
[Payer App sends request to NPCI International Gateway (NIPL)]
│
▼
[Forex conversion executed on payer's side (USD / AED / GBP ──► INR)]
│
▼
[Merchant Bank receives INR Credit in Real-Time (Instant T+0)]
│
[Merchant receives 100% of the displayed INR bill with 0% gateway cut]
Merchants do not need to install specialized international POS terminals or sign expensive foreign merchant acquiring agreements.
Currency Conversion, Forex Markups & Settlement
One of the greatest advantages of UPI International for domestic business owners is zero currency risk:
| Parameter | International Credit Card (Swipe / Online) | UPI International (QR / Web) |
|---|---|---|
| Merchant Settlement Currency | INR | INR (Indian Rupees) |
| Merchant Processing Fee | 3.00% – 3.50% + 18% GST | 0.00% – Standard Domestic Rate |
| Settlement Timeline | 3 to 7 Rolling Business Days | Instant T+0 Real-Time |
| Chargeback Risk | High (Up to 120 days post-stay) | Zero (Irreversible Push Payment) |
| Forex Risk | Borne by merchant / processor | Handled on payer’s side |
When an NRI guest pays ₹45,000 for a stay at your boutique resort, you receive exactly ₹45,000 in your bank account, avoiding the ₹1,600+ fee deduction typical of international credit cards.
Best Practices for Hotels, Handicrafts & Travel Desks
If your business serves international tourists or expatriates:
- Display “UPI Accepted Here” Signage: Foreign travelers frequently ask if they can pay with UPI. Clear signage gives them confidence to pay via their phone.
- Use Screen-Based Dynamic QR Codes: Instead of printed paper stands where foreigners must manually type INR amounts, display a dynamic screen powered by VyaparGateway showing the exact bill total.
- Automate Digital Receipts: Tourists require receipts for travel insurance and customs declarations. VyaparGateway’s automated webhook pipeline instantly delivers a branded digital PDF invoice to the tourist’s email or WhatsApp within seconds of payment.
Direct answers
Frequently asked questions
- Can foreign tourists pay via UPI when visiting India?
- Yes. Under the 'UPI One World' initiative by NPCI and RBI, inbound international travelers arriving at major airports (Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru) can obtain a prepaid UPI wallet linked to their foreign passport and phone number to scan Indian merchant QRs.
- Can Non-Resident Indians (NRIs) use their international phone numbers on UPI?
- Yes. NPCI allows NRIs from over 12 countries (including USA, UK, UAE, Singapore, Canada, and Australia) to link their international mobile numbers to their Indian NRE/NRO bank accounts and make UPI payments seamlessly.
- Does an Indian merchant receive foreign currency or Indian Rupees (INR)?
- The Indian merchant always receives settlement in Indian Rupees (INR) directly into their domestic bank account. Foreign exchange conversion and markup are handled on the payer's side by their issuing bank or foreign wallet.
