If you run a business that caters to NRI customers or international visitors, you have probably wondered whether UPI can bridge the cross-border payment gap. The short answer is: yes, more than most people realise — but the mechanism matters. This guide explains exactly how NRI and cross-border UPI works, what Indian merchants can collect today, and where the realistic boundaries lie.

UPI One World — UPI for Foreign Visitors

NPCI launched UPI One World specifically for foreign nationals visiting India. It is a prepaid wallet solution, not a bank account link. Here is how it works:

  • A foreign visitor (tourist, business delegate, student on a short visa) approaches a partner bank or airport kiosk and loads INR into a prepaid UPI wallet.
  • They receive a UPI ID linked to this prepaid balance.
  • They can scan any UPI QR code at any merchant in India and pay in INR from the wallet.
  • When they leave, the remaining balance is refunded.

For merchants, this is invisible. A payment from a UPI One World wallet looks identical to any other UPI credit in your bank statement. If you accept UPI, you already accept UPI One World without any integration change.

NRI UPI — International Mobile Numbers on Indian Bank Accounts

The bigger opportunity for most merchants is NRI customers who maintain Indian bank accounts. NPCI has enabled UPI registration using international mobile numbers from the following countries (as of 2026):

  • Singapore (+65)
  • United Kingdom (+44)
  • United States of America (+1)
  • United Arab Emirates (+971)
  • Nepal (+977)
  • Bhutan (+975)
  • Sri Lanka (+94)
  • Australia (+61), Malaysia (+60), and several others under bilateral arrangements

An NRI in Singapore, for example, can download BHIM or any UPI-enabled banking app, register their Singapore mobile number, link it to their NRE or NRO account held with an Indian bank (SBI, HDFC, ICICI, Axis, etc.), and transact in INR directly.

From the merchant’s perspective, this is a fully domestic UPI transaction. The money is already in an Indian bank account. The NPCI rails settle it like any other UPI payment — same speed, same VPA-to-VPA structure.

NRE vs NRO Accounts — What Merchants Should Know

NRIs maintain two main types of Indian accounts:

  • NRE (Non-Resident External): Holds income earned abroad, converted to INR. Fully repatriable. Interest is tax-free in India.
  • NRO (Non-Resident Ordinary): Holds income earned in India (rent, dividends, pension). Repatriation is subject to limits (up to USD 1 million per financial year with CA certificate).

Both account types can be linked to UPI. When your NRI customer pays you from an NRE or NRO account via UPI, it is a domestic INR transaction from an Indian-registered bank account. There is no foreign currency involved at the merchant’s end.

What VyaparGateway Enables

VyaparGateway is a merchant UPI software layer — it generates payment links, dynamic QR codes, and provides webhook-based payment confirmation. For NRI customers:

  • Payment links work globally. You share a VyaparGateway payment link via WhatsApp or email. Your NRI customer opens it on their phone, their UPI app opens, and they pay from their NRE/NRO account.
  • QR codes work for NRIs in India. When your NRI customer is visiting India, they can scan your QR and pay using their international-number-registered UPI account.
  • Settlement is T+0 directly to your Indian bank account. No intermediary holds the funds.

The key requirement: your customer must have a UPI-registered account linked to an Indian bank. VyaparGateway does not process foreign card payments (Visa/Mastercard/Amex in USD or GBP) — that requires an RBI-licensed Payment Aggregator.

FEMA Compliance — What You Need to Know

Receiving money from an NRI via UPI on their NRE/NRO account is not a foreign remittance from a FEMA perspective. The funds are already in India. You do not need an AD Category II licence or any special RBI approval to receive such payments.

However, if a foreign entity (company or individual) wants to pay you in foreign currency from abroad and have it converted to INR, that is an inward remittance governed by FEMA. Such transactions must flow through an Authorised Dealer bank, not via UPI directly. VyaparGateway is not designed for and does not support that use case.

Realistic Expectations for Cross-Border UPI

Here is a clear summary of what is possible today:

  • Collect from NRI customers with Indian UPI accounts: Yes, works out of the box with VyaparGateway.
  • Accept UPI One World from foreign visitors to India: Yes, automatically supported.
  • Accept foreign currency payments via Visa/Mastercard from abroad: No — this requires a licensed Payment Aggregator with AD Category I/II bank tie-up.
  • Accept UPI from customers in countries outside NPCI bilateral countries: Not yet — NPCI is expanding bilateral arrangements, but it is limited today.

Practical Steps to Start Accepting NRI UPI Payments

  1. Create your VyaparGateway account and complete merchant onboarding.
  2. Generate a payment link or QR from the dashboard.
  3. Share the link with your NRI customer via WhatsApp, email, or embed it in your invoice.
  4. Your customer opens the link, UPI app auto-launches, they authenticate and pay.
  5. You receive real-time webhook notification and funds settle directly to your bank.

For businesses serving the Indian diaspora — tutors, astrologers, software consultants, property managers, exporters, wedding planners — this opens a significant collection channel without any additional regulatory overhead.

The Indian UPI ecosystem is expanding its international reach steadily. Staying informed and configured correctly means you collect faster and lose less to intermediary fees.

Direct answers

Frequently asked questions

Can NRI customers pay via UPI to Indian merchants?
Yes. NRIs with Indian bank accounts (NRE/NRO) can link their accounts to UPI using their international mobile number from supported countries including Singapore, UK, USA, UAE, Nepal, Bhutan, and Sri Lanka. These payments work exactly like domestic UPI transfers.
Does VyaparGateway support international card payments?
No. VyaparGateway is a merchant UPI tool, not an RBI-licensed Payment Aggregator. It enables collection from UPI-registered customers, including NRIs who have linked an Indian bank account to UPI. True international card payments (Visa/Mastercard in foreign currencies) require a licensed PA.
What is UPI One World and who can use it?
UPI One World is a prepaid wallet-based UPI product launched by NPCI for foreign nationals visiting India. It allows tourists and business visitors to load INR into a prepaid wallet and pay at UPI-enabled merchants without an Indian bank account. It is available at select partner banks and airport kiosks.
